When it comes to relationships, we all want to feel heard, respected, and cared for. In couples therapy, the focus is on exploring relational dynamics to better understand maladaptive patterns of communicating and relating. Relationship struggles often arise as a result of difficulties in communication, which lead to misunderstanding and conflict. In couples therapy, you’ll learn how to identify and effectively communicate your needs and how to meet the needs of your partner to increase understanding and connection.

There’s no step-by-step rulebook for how to be a “good parent,” which means there will be plenty of mess ups, mistakes and challenges along the way. Effective parenting involves understanding your behavior and your children’s behavior and addressing unhelpful relational dynamics. For all families, it can be easy to fall into unhelpful patterns of expressing and communicating that result in conflict and disconnection. When change happens in the family, (e.g., a child develops a mental health disorder, parental divorce, adjustment to online schooling, job loss, new addition to the family, etc.), the system can be thrown off balance and will adjust itself in order to return to homeostasis. Often when this happens, families will unconsciously develop maladaptive interpersonal dynamics in an effort to compensate for the change and reset the equilibrium. Our work in family therapy involves helping families disrupt these negative cycles and learn more adaptive ways of communicating and relating.
